Outstanding Academic Advisor

Sydney S. Dickson
Child Development Program Coordinator
1989

"As an advisor she takes the time to individually listen, explain, and plan academic goals with her advisees. She can often be found advising students beyond office hours; this time is over and above her regular responsibilities. In addition, Dr. Dickson is the faculty advisor for a student club, the Child Development Student Association. She spends a considerable amount of time helping with programs that will not only benefit the club members, but also majors and minors from related disciplines. Often, students from other majors ask her questions regarding academics. She offers the student what information she has available, and makes appropriate contacts with other faculty members in order to fulfill the students' needs."

"Dr. Dickson was instrumental in designing and implementing major changes in the major and minor within a year's time. The changes in program reflect more accurately what is expected of the undergraduates both in their grounding in theoretical and applied material. It provides realistic options for students who desire to continue on to graduate school, work in early childhood administration or work directly with children and families. I give Sydney credit for providing the leadership to make such improvements."

"I found Dr. Dickson to be very open and sensitive to my exploratory process. Her input and listening, as well as her guidance in how to investigate areas of interest were invaluable. She continued to be supportive throughout my undergraduate career. I knew that I could depend on her for advice and direction, and that she would be honest and direct."
