Stephen R. Newlin
Department of Political Science
1986
"The
phrases caring attitude toward advisees, effective interpersonal
skills, and availability to advisees perfectly describe Steve's
advising style. . . .
Because
he is involved in the Instructional Television for Students program
which serves students living hundreds of mile away, he must interact
with a variety of re-entry and non-traditional types. These students
have special needs and cannot come to the main campus for assistance.
Steve does not just schedule classes but rather supports and
encourages their efforts in a wholistic fashion.
As a
re-entry student myself who went back to college while working
full-time, Steve's 'care and feeding' were critical in the successful
completion of my bachelor's degree. When my office held an evening
party to celebrate my graduation, Steve came to personally confer my
diploma."

Assistant Director of Admissions
"At
first glance it might appear that no one could handle all of these
advising duties - on-campus, off-campus, and with potential students
- and do a good job. Yet, Dr. Newlin not only does a good job, he
does a superlative job of dealing with each of these populations. He
is familiar with all of the disciplinary majors, minors and
certificates within the School as well as with all of those that are
interdisciplinary (most of which he was involved in developing). Even
more. he works very closely with the university-wide Advising Office,
the Career Planning Center, and the Placement Office. As a result he
is very much on top of university procedures and policies, general
career concerns, and career opportunities as these relate to students
in the groups he serves."
