A student’s transition to college can be as challenging for parents as it is for the student. Helping your son or daughter make the transition to a university setting raises a lot of questions, and finding the balance between guiding your student and supporting their independence can also be a challenge. What else can you, as parents, do?

  1. Explore different majors and careers!
    • Take an interest-inventory test.
    • Research various career fields.
    • Choose courses of interest.
    • Try various options through internships and summer jobs.
  2. Get involved at Chico State!
    • Join campus and leadership activities within student organizations, faculty research, and volunteer activities. In addition to broadening your student's horizons, these activities will contribute to a well rounded resume.
  3. Participate in an internship .
    • Expand the learning process through an internship that will further explore a major, build their resume, and possibly launch a new career.
  4. Establish strong relationships with advisors and faculty.
    • Maintain open communication about grades and academic progress.
    • Your son or daughter WILL have professor contact information on each syllabus during the first week of school!

    Most Important:

  5. Support your son or daughter’s efforts to be academically successful. Be proactive in their educational endeavors.
  6. Although it may seem helpful, please refrain from selecting a major for your student. Instead, help them focus on their own abilities and interests and the career doors they may open.
  7. Assist them in making independent and well informed decisions.
  8. Emphasize to your son or daughter that THEY are responsible for their education.
