General Education Requirements
|
General Education (GE) is a portion of your college curriculum which allows you to explore a variety of academic disciplines in addition to your major coursework. GE will help you to see your major’s place in your total education by showing you that knowledge is not isolated, that what you know of one subject is related to what you know of another, that there is always more to know, and that what you know affects the way you live. The Academic Planning Sheet [pdf] lists all Graduation Requirements, General Education Requirements, as well as the Upper Division Thematic Requirement. It is intended to help you keep track of what requirements you have completed and which ones are remaining. Take time to explore your General Education requirements! General Education Breakdown: General Education Core (Area A): The GE core consists of four foundational courses designed to develop skills needed for the remainder of a student’s college career. It is recommended for students to complete these requirements in their first year. NOTE: A minimum grade of C- is required in each course taken to fulfill Area A requirements. General Education Breadth (Area’s B, C, D, E): The Breadth includes the Sciences (Area B), the Humanities and Fine Arts (Area C), Behavioral and Social Sciences (Area D), and Lifelong Learning (Area E). GE Area A, B, C, D and E requirements can be fulfilled at any California Community College. See an Academic advisor for more information on how you can fulfill lower-division GE requirements at a Community College. Upper Division Thematic: The upper division GE theme consists of three courses from three different disciplines: Natural Science, Humanities and Fine Arts, and Social Science. Each of the themes represents a topic of far-reaching concern. In addition to allowing you to immerse yourself in depth in the topic, you have the opportunity to draw from your previous General Education experiences and skills in exploring the dimensions of the theme. Modifications for high unit majors: Are you in a high unit major? If so, there are modifications to your General Education requirements. Check the list! Cultural Diversity: The Cultural Diversity requirements are not part of your GE requirements; or they are Graduation requirements. They can, however, be fulfilled or “double-counted” within General Education. Courses that meet these requirements are identified on the Academic Planning sheet as either a NW or E. You can also view the University Catalog for a complete listing of courses that satisfy the Cultural Diversity requirements. |
