Undergraduate International - Money Matters

The US Immigration and Naturalization Service requires evidence of sufficient financial support for issuance of an I-20. Expenses for one year of study:

$ 5,800 Fall and Spring Registration fees ($2900 per semester)

$11,160 Tuition** ($372 x 30 units per year, maximum tuition paid per year)

$ 10,000 Living and personal expenses (10 months)

$ 1,040 Books, course fees, and miscellaneous academic expenses

Total approximately $ 28,000 for the 2010-2011 academic year

Please Note: If you will not have Health insurance coverage from home and must purchase it here add another $900.

**Units shown above are for an average course load. International students must maintain full- time enrollment, a minimum of 12 units per semester. Summer school enrollment is optional, fees and tuition are not included in the above amounts.

The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, CSU must reserve the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees, without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun. All CSU listed fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by The Board of Trustees.

Financial support documentation needed

Privately sponsored students:

  • Statement of support - Section 3 of the International application, the Financial Support form if you are completing the on line Mentor application, or a letter from the sponsor indicating their intent to provide full support.
  • Statement from sponsor's bank indicating they have the ability to provide promised support.

Government sponsored students:

  • Original bursary letter from the sponsoring government agency is required.

California State University, Chico does not offer financial aid for international students. The cost of housing in Chico is reasonable and many international students work up to 20 hours/ week on campus to supplement their funds. Students who can handle work and school generally work around 10 hours per week. Individual students will require differing amounts for their living expenses. Our figure is based on a little more than $225 per week for 42 weeks to cover all expenses. Often students find they can manage on a little less once they have been here a year and can share expenses with friends.

There are small private scholarships available. For more information about these see our Scholarship page http://fa.csuchico.edu/fa/typesOfAid/scholarships/Another source of scholarships is FastWeb at http://www.studentservices.com/index.ptml.
