Undergraduate International - English Proficiency

All international students, whose native language is not English, must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Methods that meet the English language proficiency requirement:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) official international score of 500 on the paper-based exam, 173 on the computer-based exam, or 61 on the iBT internet-based TOEFL. Chico's institution code is 4048. More information visit this site: http://www.toefl.org/
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) band 6 is required. More information regarding IELTS visit this site: http://www.ielts.org/
  • Completion of the level 6 in the on campus intensive English language program the American Language and Culture Institute, ALCI: http://rce.csuchico.edu/alci/
  • ELS Language Centers successful completion of level 112
  • 3 years of full-time academic study at the secondary and/or post-secondary level located in an  English-speaking country.
  • Completion of General Education Area A communication courses at a regionally accredited college or university with grades of C- or better in these areas: Area A1, Oral Communication; Area A2, Written Communication; A3, Critical Thinking

Conditional Admission

We offer conditional admission to students who meet our academic and financial requirements for admission but do not meet the minimum English language proficiency requirement. You can be admitted for your major program of study along with full-time ESL study. Submit to the University your university application for admission, your academic and financial documents for university admission, and a completed ALCI application.
