High School Scholars / Step to College Program(s)

We are pleased you are interested in participating in our High School Scholar (HSS) or Step to College (STC) program.   If you have previously been enrolled in HSS or STC, we hope your experience has been a positive one.  If you are enrolling for the first time, we welcome you!

High School Scholars is an excellent opportunity for local high school students to get a real college experience by taking courses at Chico State.  This is an opportunity for students to earn college credit while they are still in high school and for very reasonable cost.  For just $7 students can take up to two college courses at Chico State!

The following procedures will allow you the possibility as a high school student to also enroll in a university course.

  • The program is limited to enrollment for high school students at least 16 years of age with junior or senior class status.  You must reapply each semester.
  • Priority is always given to continuing, matriculated students.  Classes you wish to enroll in will be on a space available basis, and it is your responsibility to add the class.  Once you complete and return the application form for approval, you will be allowed to begin registration the 1st day of classes each semester.  You will have the two week add/drop period once classes begin to complete the process.  You will be responsible for paying the $7.00 fee by the fee payment deadline of July 31, 2008 for fall and December 11, 2008 for spring.
  • English composition is not offered to HSS.
  • Math courses are limited to Statistics (Math 105) or Calculus (120, 121, 220, and above).  You will be allowed to enroll in math if you meet any of the following:
    • SAT I math score of 550 or above
    • ACT math score of 23 or above
    • Advanced Placement Calculus or Statistics score of 3 or above
  • If you do not meet any of these exemptions, you may choose to take the Entry Level Math exam (ELM) administered here at CSU, Chico.  The cost is $18.00.  You will need a score of 50 or above to be allowed to enroll in a GE math course.  You may contact the Testing Office at (530) 898-6218 for information on how to register for the ELM.
